what to do in south west Wales
« on: April 17, 2011, 09:55:18 am »

Hi all,

I\\\'m heading over to Swallow Boats next month and have a couple of days up my sleeve.  Any suggestions of things to do/see in South West Wales?  I was going to look at castle or two but anything along the coast of a nautical nature to look at?

regards,

Andrew

Andrew,
if you have the time, I can warmly recommend an excursion to Aberdyfi and Portmeirion to the north of Cardigan. To get a taste for the area, try to get hold of and watch parts 3 and 4 of the original BBC production \\\'Coast\\\'.

Just go for a walk along the coast, it is stunning.

If you have any interest in steam, the Vale of Rheidol line from Aberystwyth (2 ft gauge)), the Talyllyn Railway (2 ft 3 ins) from Towyn, and the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway (2 ft 6ins) are all worth a ride.

H, Andrew.

If you count eating as one of the things to do, try:-
http://www.llysmeddyg.com

The food\\\'s great. (The rooms are too, but prices have escalated since they were “adopted” by the London smart set and have priced me, for one, out of the market. )

Click on their “Things to do” link . (– but  looking for the mistake in Nevern\\\'s Celtic Cross in the rain might test your patience! )

If you get near Mid Glamorgan try the Welsh Whisky distillery. (They also have a visitors link.)

It\\\'s good stuff – if a  bit “civilised” for a Laphroaig fan.

As a West Walian, I would recommend Tenby as my favorite West Wales spot, try the buchaneer for food, plentiful and reasonable. There\\\'s a nice habour there and some boat trips. Caldy Island is worth a visit.

St Davids is also very nice, smallest city in Britain but big in character.

Both these places are beutiful and well worth going too but both are at least an hour from Cardigan.

Mwnt and Tresaith are both beautiful spots and a bit closer. See if you can see Dolphins, I remember seeing a pod when I was young, I\\\'ll never forget it.
