... I can tell you that my Super Mini self bailer in the sump is nbg. ...
Correct. It is too close to the centreline of the boat and the laminar flow there is disturbed by the centreboard case turbulence wash. In addition, it is in front of the rim of the lamellae frame, which builds up some counterpressure . Thirdly, the \\\'Super Mini\\\' is for inside-hull mounting and problematic for hulls as thick as the BRs. Leave it in anyway, though it is not very useful where it is it does not do actual harm there. But do add the two \\\'Mini\\\' selfbailers on either side of the sump as suggested as well. The Minis are for outside mounting and have a wider deflecting plate which creates more suction at lower speeds. And if set far out on either side, they are clear from the centreboard wash and from the lamellae rim. Thus the side Minis really suck so much better than the central \\\'Super Mini\\\' you have, you\\\'ll be delighted.

Swallow Boats put my bungs in for me. I wonder why they did not also fit the two additional Mini selfbailers, wouldn\\\'t have taken them much effort. And am pretty sure they also did not put in any tank airventing? -All filling and emptying of the ballast tank is limited by adequate airventing of the tank. Loosening the main hatch is not enough by a long way -and not safe-, and having the hatch all open is ... having the ballast tank all open. -Compromises the safety and capsizing properties of the boat.

I didn\\\'t ask them to put in the Minis as I didn\\\'t realise that the Super Mini was quite so ineffective. I\\\'ll do the vent myself but I think large rectangular holes are a bit beyond my competence!

I agree it is a somewhat more serious operation. However, it needs to be done and if the yard doesn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t do it, there will be a boatbuilder near you who will do it for you, and in a jiffy. There is a stencil for the cutout in the Andersen Mini box, you draw the outline onto the hull, drill a proper radius hole in all four corners and connect the holes using an electric jigsaw. You smoothe the cutout using a small drill with a router bit until the bailer fits well in. You then drill the fastening bolts through holes, and sink the holes underneath the hull. Very important to seal all drill holes and coutout edges with one or two coats of Epoxy, and when you set the bailer in, use Sikaflex generously. Finally wipe off the surplus Sikaflex, ready. The boatbuilder doesn\\\'t do it differently, only he does it quicker, and doesn\\\'t make mistakes. It is not complicated or dangerous, but a mistake can be made, so I would really hope Swallowboats starts doing this for all its customers. It\\\'s an important improvement for the waterballast system of the plastic BRs. (The wooden BRs are different there.)

Colin, through the wonders of modern technology, here is another photo taken minutes ago by my wife while I am 1,000 km away. It shows my Urchin installation and the three new bungs from directly above. The non-functioning Super Mini can just be seen under the sail in the edge of shot on the right.
Claus, the Super Mini seems to be about 30cm from the centre line, which may not give me enough space to install a Mini on the outside of it. My other option might be to remove it and replace it with a \\\"New Large\\\". Like the Mini, this is externally mounted (and therefore presumably has the same advantages). The required hole is the same width as that for the Super Mini, but I would need to lengthen it by 20mm.

Graham, I cannot recommend using any other selfbailer than the Andersen \\\'Mini\\\'. Do not assume any bigger size bailer for outside mounting will automatically have the same efficiency as the \\\'Mini\\\'. I actually tried a \\\'New Large\\\' inside the tank and was disappointed. I recommend you leave the \\\'Super Mini\\\' in, but as a first step fit one additional \\\'Mini\\\' on Portside, as per the photo below. You can then compare the sucking of the two and decide whether you want to throw out the Super Mini and swap that for another Mini. Funny the three little bungs sitting close to each other in the rear tank wall. Why did you do that? There should be one 1\\\" diameter bung on the centreline and two smaller ones on each side, as far out as possible, as per the photo below.

Good idea on the single self bailer for the time being; and good question on the positioning of the bungs. I will see how I get on with the latter and if they prove inadequate, I may well end up with five holes instead of three!

Graham, if you will not have the side bungs, you will not reap the full benefit of this modification. Without the side bungs the emptying process will take much longer, and the tank will not empty under sail more than 80%. Been there myself.
