How to prevent your national flag or pennant from rolling up around the flagpole during jybing? Swivel it!

1. File 2 rectangular shaped grooves around the flagpole stick.

2. Use two horizontal plastic cable ties to attach the flag to the pole, then two vertical cable ties crosswise across the other cable ties to narrow the loops around the pole grooves, so that these cannot slip out from the grooves but still have enough loose play to swivel freely.

Hello Claus,

Are the two cable ties below the flag to stop it slipping down the mast?  How do you fix it to the mast?

Hi David,
yes, those lower cable-ties prevent the stick from sliding too far down the luff pocket.

With the tell-tale depicted below, they also prevent the wood of the stick from splitting where the steel tell-tale shaft is glued in.

If you have no luff pocket but the old laced gaff and sail, you can attach the flagpole sticks to that using bungee cords.

BTW, the sticks I use are really lengths of furniture plugs which you should be able to get at DIY stores. I use the riffled ones because these I can get in mahogany.

CU in Morbihan,
Claus
