Choice of Hull Material As per the famous Drascombe Lugger, the first BayRaiders are being built in plywood. This has proved to be a tough and durable construction material, especially with modern epoxy ply techniques. However, the sales success of the BayRaider has also led us to invest in moulds for glass fibre production. We will of course continue to produce boats in epoxy ply too - by Summer 2008 there should be 11 on the water. The wooden boat has the advantage of probably looking better in 30-40 years time. An epoxy ply boat can be repainted every 4-5 years and will look as good or better than the day she was made. She is also lighter than her basic GRP counterpart. For this reason we have decided to offer the GRP boats in three different grades of hull materials: BayRaider GRP - Glass fibre Reinforced Plastic. This will be as per 99% of the leisure boats afloat today, the resin used being polyester. The finished craft will probably be significantly heavier (around 450kg) than the current epoxy ply boats, which will have a marginal effect on performance. They will be less expensive though. BayRaider GRE - Glass fibre Reinforced Epoxy. This is the same as GRP except crucially, for the resin, which is epoxy rather than polyester. A small but growing group of yacht builders are offering epoxy hulls which offer complete osmosis protection and are more durable. They are also typically stronger and lighter than GRP, we anticipate the weight (around 350kg) and price of the GRE boat will be much the same as the current epoxy ply boats.
BayRaider CRE - Carbon Fibre Reinforced Epoxy. A further step up in performance as the bulk of glass in the hull is replaced by carbon fibre. The hull weight will be in the region of 200kg. For those who want real performance gains. Please call or email us for pricing.
