Storm 15 Choices For Customers PDF Print E-mail

As well as the usual choices about sail and hull colour there are several other decisions to make when ordering a Storm 15:

The first choice is a daggerboard or centreboard. A centreboard is hinged so if you sail into shallow water, it will ride up and not slow you down much. A daggerboard is simpler but in shallows you will stop abruptly. The daggerboard is recommended if you generally sail in tidal estuaries and across mudflats. It can be irritating to sail with in shallow water as you have no warning before coming to a sudden stop. The centreboard takes up a little more room in the cockpit but it is slightly lower than the daggerboard so it does not feel significant. We recommend this decision is based solely on where you intend to sail and finances – the CB costs extra.

The next is unusually, a choice of bow shape. This arose after significant input from our website readers who could not give us a clear favourite of one shape over the over. Thanks to CNC machining we can offer both sorts, the faering/Shetland/Scandinavian style overhanging bow, and the more traditional workboat style vertical bow. Both have the same length overall so the vertical bow option has more waterline - slightly more speed. It might also be a touch less likely to slam in a seaway, though this is always hard to compare. Base your decision on looks alone, we have drawn the two bow shapes below for you to compare.

Lastly the rig. An alternative to the standard jib and mizzen combination is the balanced lug, shown in the vertical bow boat above. It is simpler, quicker to rig but not as close winded and slightly more alarming in an uncontrolled gybe. Again, looks are important and if you have strong feelings either way then go with them. We would be happy to talk you through other rigs if you have something special in mind. Please do get in touch.
