The Design Brief As mentioned above, the two key characteristics of the design are to be sparkling sailing performance combined with unparalleled safety features. The boat must be capable of being towed, launched and recovered behind an average family car, which means keeping the weight down. For this reason it again makes perfect sense for water ballast to be employed to give weight and stability in poor conditions, but light-displacement performance and minimal towing weight too. She must be quick and simple to rig to take advantage of her trailerability. This means a mast on a tabernacle, with a minimum of running and standing rigging. At present we are favouring a ketch rig similar to the BayRaider with the possible difference of a one piece mast. There is no space to store the lowered gunter topmast in this design and access to the base of the mast for reefing is more difficult. The jib will be set conventionally, rather than on a club boom. The boom is fine on the BayRaider but can make the foredeck a dangerous place to sit, and you need access to the aft end of the boom in order to furl it. We are looking at a track system to maintain the self tacking ability of BayRaider. There will also be an optional retractable bowsprit which in order fly a large asymmetric kite for those that need more performance. Inside there will be plenty of options to suit taste and requirements. A twin vee-berth forward is a good use of the space with 1/4 berths under the cockpit seats each side as options. There will be room for cooking, toilet facilities and a saloon table for eating/navigating. The cockpit will be self draining, with an emphasis on comfort. An optional spray hood will cover half the cockpit enabling the helmsman to shelter from foul weather while at the tiller. It also keeps rain out of the cabin when the companionway is open. There will be room for a diesel inboard engine under the bridge deck though a 4-6HP outboard in a well on the centreline (as on our BayRaider) will provide more than adequate power at a fraction of the cost. There will be room in large cockpit lockers to stow an infaltable dinghy, fenders, spare anchor etc, and room on the cabin roof/bulkhead for Electronics like chartplotter and fishfinder. The price of the BayCruiser 20 will be approximately £19,900 plus VAT.
